Character's Full Name Malachi Uzziah Scully Played By: Cillian Murphy Birthdate & Age: 36, 10.13.72 Residence: New York City Screen name: ohmymalachi Biography: Some kids get good loving parents. Malachi Scully got Aaron and Hannah Scully. Aaron and Hannah believed punishment, especially physical punishment, was the way to salvation. And their only slightly redeeming quality was that they did want their son saved and for his next life to be better. They just never bothered to think about all the damage they were inflicting on him in this life. Not only did they punish him for every single transgression, large or small, but their restrictions and reputation also made Malachi an outcast at school.
It wasn't until after he started playing organ for the church that he was allowed to join the school band with another instrument – the saxophone. In school band, two important things happened: Malachi was exposed to rock music thanks to the radio the teacher would play before rehearsals and he met George and Preston. Around the same time Malachi started to realize that his parents weren't hurting him because they loved him, like they said, but for some darker reason, Chi (as George and Preston started to call him) started to accumulate what his father would consider contraband. Mixed tapes of rock music, and eventually, through no small feat of lying his ass off, Chi bought a bass guitar. Somewhere in that stifling band room, Machine was formed.
With high school came more problems for the boy that wasn't allowed to stay in the room when the teacher talked about evolution, or during the 'fun parts' as George called it of The Scarlett Letter. See, Malachi started to realize something: girls didn't do it for him. Even though he was starting to distance himself from his family and their beliefs, the realization nearly killed him. Or rather, he nearly killed himself, but his father found him in time to get him to the hospital to pump his stomach. To his horror, his father checked him out of the hospital against medical advise, citing religious beliefs, and beat Chi so badly with a cane that he didn't get out of bed for four days. That was the last straw, the moment when Chi realized his parents didn't give a shit about him.
For the rest of high school, Chi broke rules, ran to sleep and either George or Preston's house, and was punished. The vicious cycle would've continued on if Malachi's father didn't find his stash of music, the bass, and yes, a few pictures of men in obvious poses. A fight ensued, and ended with Malachi bleeding but feeling liberated on George's blow up mattress. After that, he rotated between George and Preston's houses, his parents never trying to find them even though he was all of five miles away.
Over the years, as Machine grew in popularity, Malachi started to grow into himself more, coming to terms with, and accepting his sexuality. He's very open and honest about it, and does work to help support GLBTQ teenagers. He has his times of extreme emotion, sometimes hurting himself when he feels extremely guilty, but usually if he's not left on his own too long, he rights himself again. He is known as the quietest member of the band, and struggles to fight his (sometimes extreme) social anxiety. Mass crowds of people, especially reporters but even fans sometimes makes him so uneasy he throws up, but that too seems to move in cycles. But he tries to improve every day, which is all he thinks any human being can strive for.
